Lizard sensitivity to caffeine

landtosea May 31, 2011 03:38 PM

How sensitive are lizards to caffeine? I want to use spent espresso grounds as substrate for my BSF larvae feeders and am concerned if they eat the grounds that they will build up caffeine within their bodies and possibly present toxic levels to my Bearded Dragons. I have looked high and low to find some sort of study data related in any way to reptiles and caffeine and have had no luck. Any factual data or experience good or bad is welcome. Thanks!

Using it as substrate. Should they be eating their substrate? For rats you cant feed any food that has red dye because it builds up in them. When snakes it the rat it kills the snake. Personally I would not be giving caffiene to my reptiles..... prob lead to very active and odd tempered lizards. I know for meal worms you can just cover the bottom in oatmeal and come out with a good amount of larva.....

Dubia feeder roaches are super easy to do. It is my feeder insect of choice. If you get more infom post it, I am very interested in hearing your outcomes. Possible post pics?

No clue if eating feeders kept/feeding on coffee grounds would pose a problem to lizards. Probably better to just put the grounds into a compost or garden, if you don't want to just toss them out, and stick to typical substrates for your feeders known to be safe both for the feeder and lizard.
