Found 5 lined skink eggs

ShadyLady Jun 03, 2011 07:56 PM

I rolled over a log in my horse pen today and found two clutches of 5 lined skink eggs. I saw one of the moms run off. Felt bad about that, but put them in some vermiculite/perlite medium and in my warm closet where I hatch my snake eggs. I hope this medium isn't too moist, it was dry as a bone under that log. We've had no rain lately in my part of N. Florida.

From what I read, the mom stays with the eggs until they hatch and then a few days afterwards. And, that they hatch in 25 days or so. Also that they gain size as they get closer to hatching.

The first eight eggs in the picture below are from one clutch. They are pinker and larger than the others. We'll see what hatches!

I wonder if they'll eat small meal worms? I'd like to feed them before I release them.

I have found skink eggs here in S.Florida also but seemed they took longer than a month to hatch.

I just kept them in pure shade in screened patio in more or less same style set up as yours with container sitting in another container with water to prevent ants and misted them now and than .I found them late June last year and the summer heat was enough to hatch them.

I did not feed them when they hatched just let them go and though found all the eggs at same time under fallen log we were grinding up .
The eggs hatched at different days about 10 days apart. If you want to feed them they are tiny but still big enough to take pinhead crickets.

Yes we do need rain lol.

Thanks for the info. I see a bit of liquid coming from one egg this morning. Maybe its hatching. Yeah, I guess I'll just release them as they hatch.

Checked on them this evening. Looks like one has hatched and another pipping. The egg with the liquid coming from it in my earlier post was going bad. I think these are the older eggs, and hatching starting at day 27 from when I found them.
