Bearded Dragon Questions

dctaz Jun 06, 2011 08:54 AM

just got my first baby Beardie... I am so happy with him. I want to make sure I keep him healthy and i wanted to ask other beardie owners how they care for there Beardies. I have done a lot of readig and ask the petstore people. But talking to owners is always better, in my opinion.

Main questions are..

What does your beardie like to eat?
Do you feed your Beardie crickets, if so how often?
What do you choose for heating and light?

Any answers whould be great. thanks.

I have fed baby dragons mostly appropriately sized crickets, mostly due to the fact it is easy and cheap to get sufficient amounts of crickets to feed the needs of a fast growing baby. Making sure crickets are well gut loaded at least 12 hours before feeding (gut load can be store bought, greens, fish flakes, chicken mash and other items)

Once my bearded dragon gets around 14" long I add in superworms, butterworms, medium sized silkworms and hornworms, to provide variety. Phoenix worms are also great for small dragons too.

For heat/lighting I use typical household flood lights for heat, and a quality UVB producing tube, such as Repti-sun or Repti glo, 8.0 or 10.0.

It is important to provide as many insects your baby dragon can eat in a 5-10 min time, 2-4 times a day (more for younger dragons, less for older dragons) By the time they are 8 months to 12 months, daily insect feelings and greens should be fine. After a year old, insects can be a couple times a week...
