Really Jun 06, 2011 04:02 PM

I found these guys in a local pet store with the greens yesterday. I swore I'd never have another green but.....

BUY `BUY BUY... i hear.. not sure... that tom C sells them for 10k each...

Really Jun 06, 2011 06:29 PM

Oh I did indeed buy them! Now I have to figure out what to do with two more iguanas! I may keep one and sell the other. I called my vet about having them sexed.

Someone else on Kingsnake has a pair of hatchings for $375 though, so I don't know what is doing on. If the market is suddenly flooded with blues, I imagine Tom is going to be very upset.

Really Jun 06, 2011 06:31 PM

Maybe it was a mistake and it was supposed to be 3700? Even at that, that's still cheap for a pair.

Really Jun 06, 2011 06:56 PM

These aren't the ones from the kingsnake ad, btw, just to clarify. I bought these in a local pet store.

Extreemosaurus Jun 07, 2011 02:56 AM

ship them to me in sweden =D at a humane price plz

typherp Jun 07, 2011 03:06 AM

Has anyone seen an adult this color? I have noticed that Tom keeps his indoors...do they loose this color if they are kept outdoors?

Really Jun 07, 2011 09:13 AM

Tom keeps his outside. He only keeps the hatchlings inside.

His subadult male still has great color though.

Extreemosaurus Jun 07, 2011 10:24 AM

they seem to keep it as adults =)

typherp Jun 07, 2011 04:28 PM

I see it....hopefully it stays this color and breed true!

Manny Jun 07, 2011 11:26 AM

I have bought some blue babies before that were being kept by wholesalers in inadequate housing with no UVB lighting, etc. When I placed them outside in direct sunlight and they recovered they turned into normal greens. Not saying that there are not blue common iguanas out there but blue in a baby iguana can mean that it has been starved of essential and adequate care. If their bellies are green, this could be the case.

Really Jun 07, 2011 12:03 PM

How long did it take, Manny? I had one outside for a while the morning but otherwise they've both been under a Mega-Ray since I brought them home on Saturday. They are shedding and while the skin that is shedding is dark and a little greenish, the skin underneath is bright turquoise, including the green on their bellies. So, if they are just normal undernourished greens and not really axanthics, how long would it take for them to change back?

Manny Jun 08, 2011 12:48 PM

I have one that I kept, the otherone died. This one started turning green again after about a month of being cared for and out in direct sunlight. I think that the UVB plays a significant role in the color change.

Really Sep 25, 2011 12:12 AM

Manny and Bivattis , just an FYI/update. One of my little blues did die. It failed to thrive and never gained any weight, but it did keep it's blue color the full four months I had it. The other is also retaining his color. He's had real sunlight almost every day all day for four months. He did manage to excape his outside enclosure and he was missing for two weeks. If not for his blue coloring we never would have found him. He seems to be a tough little guy and even gained weight and grew while he was gone.

phmemphis Jun 07, 2011 02:38 PM

I seen them at all the petco's this past weekend for sale in this area. They were advertised as true blue iguanas. Very nice pair. they were not that expensive either, compared to what I expected.
Beautiful pair.

typherp Jun 07, 2011 04:20 PM

I hope they stay this color but i am betting that they will turn green as they grow....or we would have seen photos of adults. has anyone seen a photo of adult blue green iguana?

Extreemosaurus Jun 07, 2011 04:47 PM

i think that tom has a video on youtube with a large subadult or young adult in it... its very blue

phmemphis Jun 07, 2011 04:55 PM

I will ask around and see if I can get any info on them. I was very impressed with what I saw of their color. I didn't see any visual green on the ones at the petco closest to me. I would have actually bought a couple if they had not been housed with some very ill little greens.

Really Jun 07, 2011 06:04 PM

Yeah, these were at the Petco here too. They weren't much more than reds go for. I just can't figure out how Petco got hold of real axanthics and why they were so cheap. I don't want to get my hopes up, but how did they get enough blues to ship to Petcos all over the country? A few would be a mistake, but this is just odd. If they have a constant supply the price of blues will drop drastically.

I'm a little worried about these. They aren't as alert as they were and I'm concerned. I was trying to keep them together for now, but may have to move them sooner than I'd planned. I also don't know if I should get to the vet this week instead of next week as I'd planned.

phmemphis Jun 07, 2011 10:17 PM

you have a 15 day guarantee on them from Petco so I would contact them tomorrow and they will arrange for you to take them to their vet at their cost for a checkup. I don't know how they ended up with them, but it was like the surprise of the rally here. I can't wait to see what they turn out like and I will ask for info and will let you know what I can find out, the manager at the one here is a dear friend so I will see what she knows. I know out of 6 in this area they all had them which was a surprise.

phmemphis Jun 07, 2011 10:49 PM

Do yours have any green on them?

Really Jun 07, 2011 11:23 PM

One looks a little green on the unshed skin. But the skin underneath both is pure turquoise. They look lighter than Tom's, but not green at all.

If all of the Petcos got two of these, that is an awful lot of blues to suddenly be let loose on the market.

I think I will call the manager tomorrow. I know her from going in the store.

I hate to be the rain on your parade but i can assure you these are not true blue iguanas. 20 people who know what they are looking at would have seen them in the importing process before they ended up at crap-co... i mean petco. If they were anything special they never would have ended up in a chain store. sorry.

Really Jun 08, 2011 06:53 PM

Well, that is what I thought, but they were pretty and not ungodly expensive so....

phmemphis Jun 08, 2011 07:46 PM

I remember the blue diamonds but they were not as blue as yours. I know working at a local pet shop we sold alot of them and some would come back in with the most beautiful turquoise head but the bodies were always green and the head tended to gray out some as the matured.

Really Jun 08, 2011 07:58 PM

Well,I'd been thinking about another green ever since Mayan died, even though I said I was sticking with Cyclura. I had a half price coupon for these and I have a friend who wants one of them so it's not the end of the world. I never expected them to be true axanthics, but I do hope they'll be extra-pretty. I mean, I have seen the ones sold as blue diamonds, but I'd never seen any this blue in real life so I took the chance. Life is about taking chances.

Now, my husband isn't to happy with me, otoh....

typherp Jun 08, 2011 09:38 PM

talked to my contact at Petco and he/she has actually seen the adults (and they are blue) and because of that, he/she thinks that these are genetic "blues."

phmemphis Jun 08, 2011 10:15 PM

Thank you for sharing that info. Should be exciting to see them mature

Really Jun 08, 2011 11:47 PM

Thanks for this information! Do you know how your contact managed to see them? I'm not getting my hopes up, but I'll be deliriously happy if they keep their color.

bricun1 Jun 09, 2011 01:03 AM

I think it's well worth the gamble you took for the price these were being offered. They will most definitely be worth the $(and then some) if they are the real deal, and if not, you didn't break the bank and you know someone will gladly buy them from you.

One is looking greener, but hasn't shed yet. This one was more green in the store, but is now the bluer of the two. The greenish parts are where he hasn't shed yet. The dewlap is pretty spectacular. These pics are without flash. When I did try using a flash the pics were overexposed, but the black lines in the dewlap looked navy blue.

Extreemosaurus Jun 10, 2011 03:30 PM

they look like the real deal to me... if they have blue belly they prob are real blue igs.. SWEETE

Really Jun 11, 2011 08:42 PM

Thanks.

You know, I think this is the first thread I ever posted that got any kind of real response and it isn't even about Cyclura. Hardly anyone even looked at my pics of Sebastian....

Extreemosaurus Jun 12, 2011 06:02 AM

LOL we look.. but we have nothing to add..

clockworkcarrion Jun 14, 2011 07:54 PM

I had the new little iggies out for a soak and when I picked up Tazumal I noticed he has new colors coming in on his (her?) face. Quite a striking little iggy!

Really Jun 21, 2011 06:00 PM

Also, I found this today. If they stay even this blue, I'll be very very happy!
