Uros and humidity

kriminaal Jun 08, 2011 08:31 AM

Hi, I'm looking to get back into having Uros. I used to breed them years ago and am surprised that husbandry practices haven't improved since.
I still see most using dried out habitats with no moist hides or deep substrate for hydrating.
Just looking to get some feedback on this topic.

I've seen people breeding them like crazy around here! These things were popping out eggs like crazy. If you set up the cage right, they will thrive. These things will dropped dead from being too wet. Believe me! They like it really dry. I cool mine down all the time during winter and they always wake up normal and very hungry. I've seen people keeping monitor on wet dirt and they started developing severe fungal infection. In some part of the country it's easy to get fungal infection. The monitors lid up like Christmas lights when they shine UV light on it in the dark! [chuckle]

Anyway, Uro are quite fascinating! I love these things and the iguanas! they kindda keep you challenged and I love preparing the salads for them everyday.

I think most of the good care sheets do recommend a slightly more humid hide, or the ability to burrow in a soil mix, and thus let them create a slightly more humid hide for themselves. I suspect the reason so few people who aren't breeders implement these is a mix of the fact that in general they really do seem to do well without them (observationally at least), and the fact that these can be daunting or tricky to get right to a novice herper. I have no data to back any of that up however.

Welcome back.
