long term INDOOR keeping&breeding (a Q)

GetCoiled Jun 15, 2011 01:11 AM

Hi folks!

just a question: is it possible, according with your experience, a long term captive keeping and breeding in total INDOOR accomodations for C.cornuta? Are you aware os some zoos and istitutions that have kept and bred successfully rhino iguanas with no chance to provide them outdoor accomodations? I'd use food supplemts (calcium D3, between the others) and I'm pretty skilled about the best lamps to provide them (i.e. Osram Vitalux 300W).

Let me know, please
Stef

yes, its possible, you only need a good UVB source, I also breed mine here in europe only indoors. There are also some Zoos here in europe that breed them regulary only indoors.

Hi Peter,

thanks really a lot for your direct and personal shared experience!
I respect so much those animals that I could not keep them if I knew that I can't meet all their requierments, and breeding them according to me is just the proof of their wellness.

Best regards Peter

That's good to know as i too live in a area where the weather is very harsh , N.Utah . I have plenty of Lights in my Rhinos cage .Right now i have one Power-sun MVB , Two 48'' Zoo-med tubes , and Mega Ray MVB coming on Friday to replace the power-sun . I also have a second basking are with a Halogen bulb over it also under the 48" 10.0 tubes . This winter was a long one . Next year when he is calmer i will build a outdoor cage with heat lamp and get him in some real light .

I want to know how you got mega ray lights. I ordered some two months ago and can't get a hold of anyone. Finally ordered some t-rex lights. Supposedly there are made by the same company with the same recipe as mega ray lights.

I guess that the best UVB emitting lamps are the "classic" Osram Vitalux 300W.
