Stuck Eye Cap Removal ???

Sarge2004 Jun 22, 2011 08:11 AM

First time issue with a stuck or remaining eye cap on one of my retics. Any suggestions for a good way to remove it? I have heard that you can use scotch tape, mineral oil and cotton balls, or soak the snake and then place in a damp sack and the friction of the snake moving will remove the eye cap. I have a reptile shed ease spray that is safe to use on eyes. If you have a procedure that works good, please let me know. Thanks, Bill

there are many ways to remove it.

however, i usually recommend leaving it until the next shed.

up the humidity level in the mean time and the snake just may remove it on its own at some point before the next shed

I can tell you what I've done a number of times with a ball python: I wet a washcloth with cool to cold water and used it to rub the head over the eye toward the nostrils a number of times. The eyecap would loosen and I'd see it being pulled out from under the ocular scales, then it would come off completely.

I always did this as soon as I noticed a bad shed. If it has been longer with the retained eyecap for your retic, I would imagine that placing the snake in a wet bag for a while before the procedure would help.
