Osage Orange

mmathis Jun 22, 2011 01:31 PM

Is the fruit of the Osage Orange safe for turtles to eat? Can't find anything on the Internet about it.

My guess is that they would not eat it if it were available...it is pretty pungent stuff.

I have offered them to mine before because they are a common fruit in their environment but they didn't eat them. They were given to me by my mother-in-law to put in my garage to keep out rodents. Apparently the smell of Osage Oranges bothers them and maybe box turtles too? Tess

BTW, Tess, did they work against rodents?

Just curious as one of the things I read about them said that squirrels relish the seeds even though they are difficult for them to get to inside the fruit. A friend said he's seen squirrels trying, with much effort, to carry a fruit, like a comical cartoon scene!

I never used it in my garage since it is pretty secure-but my mother-in-law said it works against ground squirrels. Likley a folk belief

Thanks for the input! Was curious as I have access to the fruit and I'm always on the lookout for natural treats & food sources. Just didn't know much about the Osage orange, but guess I'll skip it. They sound pretty awful from what I've been told.
