As with the growth of my retics, and planning on building some new cages, I was surfing the web and came across a site called ReticulatedPython.Info. On the site they cover cages and said some larger retics do better in smaller cages. I realize we are still talking about a large cage compared to a boa, but do others find this to be ture? I was going to build a 8'X 4'X 2' cage for a 12 footer. Would that be too large? They were comparing the cage to a hide box. As the python would feel more secure in a smaller cage.

personally, i dont feel that there is such thing as "too large of a cage".

i always recommend as large enclosure as you can do for the snake.

there are many factors that support both little smaller cages vs as big of cage you can do.

biggest ones are: money, space, being able to heat and provide proper humidity (which can be tough, bigger the cage)

also, another factor is: keeping (breeding) vs keeping one or two as a pet.

if breeding, stackable little bit smaller enclosures are more reasonable, if a pet, you can go as elaborate as you can (again, assuming you can provide proper microenvironment for the snake(s)

I have found this to be true with a cage defensive retic that I owned years ago, I switched her to a smaller enclosures and she calmed right down. I had some issues with her before then and when I asked around that was what was suggested, it worked in this case.
