Tegus period of hibernation

Flavia Guimaraes Jun 26, 2011 03:38 PM

I have a tegus girl.Im not sure wether she is a true black or white because her head is becoming reddish.Well she is around 4 or 5 years old and she hibernates between 8 to 9 months every year. She starts to look sleepy by mid january and she starts to wake up by end september. Thats normal?

Well she looks fine.Bright skin, round limbs.

Is there a way to prevent her from hibernating at all or at least preventing her from hibernating for so many months?

I have tried every trick in the book to wake her up.I gave her warm baths but she slept again inside the water. I turned on her uvb lights but she didnt pay attention to them and continued snoring.Today i put her hot box ( an wooden box with a bulb inside) inside her sleeping cage.Lets see what happens. She is sleeping since january!!!

You don't want her to be keep a high metabolism during hibernation if she is in deep, Because she will literally starve to death in her sleep . Let her sleep she' will be one of those tegus that will live a very long time
