Help with sexing?

Chance Jun 30, 2011 09:58 AM

Though I have kept snakes for quite a while and probed more than I can remember, I have two little "male" blacktail cribos that have thrown me for a loop. They are both supposed to be male, but when I attempted to probe them they both came up "female." Not wanting to cause any damage with such small snakes, I was probably being overly cautious. However, someone suggested that young Drys can be fairly easily visually sexed, especially if you have more than one to compare.

So I thought I'd enlist the help of the best Dry experts out there and get you guys' opinions.

Both of these snakes are 2010s, though one (the first one pictured) is a bit larger than the other.

Interestingly, scrutinizing these pictures myself, I notice that the scutes just past the vent with both snakes are not the same. They're immediately split in the first one, but solid for 7 or so in the second one. I wonder why that is?

duncan, just from what's shown, i think the 1rst pic looks like a male & the 2nd, a female, but who knows at such an age??? also, i believe it may be much, much better for your snakes to mature somewhat & get a LOT larger before you probe them again! imho, it's best just to observe & keep 'it' as simple as possible. they really like it like that.... a lot!
