Help with proper size heat lamp

chrisdrake Jun 30, 2011 10:03 PM

I'm having some issues getting my basking spot hot enough. I have a new pair of yellowheads in a 68 gallon tank. I have a 125w solarglo MVB sitting on the screen. I built up and properly secured some rocks under the heat lamp. They are 12in. from the lamp. When i check my hotspot with a digital thermometer and temp gun i'm only getting a hotspot of 92 degrees. Just doesnt seem right. What size lamps do you typically use? I'm thinking about adding a second dome with a basking lamp to get the temp up. I'll try to get some pics up tomorrow. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Chris

You just have to mess with it to get it right. Not much else you can do. I personally do not like going so big, either ya have to heat the hell out of it or ya can't get them warm enough.

It's always nice to think big, but in captivity I keep them a bit smaller 40 breeder critter cages. So I can only say get your temp gun and just play around with different bulbs /watts and see if you can get it right. Best wishes with it, lol.

Thanks Eve. I'm going to switch them over from the 68 gallon which is 25in. tall to one of the new 36x18x18 exo terra cages. Its the same size as a 40g breeder. it will be easier with the doors in the front as well. I'll post some pics soon.
