Just one baby KSB?

Reptileszz Jul 08, 2011 06:17 AM

Hi all, I came home last night to find a single baby Kenyan Sand Boa in with my adults. I had a feeling she was gravid but I was under the impression that they didnt give birth until late summer/early fall so I hadnt been monitoring them very well.

Just one baby? This is her first time breeding and she is not terribly large. Do they eat the young if you leave them in there with them? For all I know she might have given birth days ago...

I removed the male and the baby. Do you think she will have more or is that it? This is my first time with live bearers so am a little clueless. I have experience with corns and balls and lizard eggs but this is totally new to me.

Thanks for any advice.

They have been know to eat still borns, live young and slugs. I do not think the live happens often though.
One babie is rare, were there any slugs in the mix? You may also start finding them roaming around if they could get out. The look of your female should tell if she is done giving birth and typically they don't stop until they are done. If she retains babies it can lead to some problems, most of which are not life threatning but can keep her from being a future breeder.

There was at least one slug/dead baby dried out when I found it. It is I think remotely possible that babies got out. It is a glass tank and not sure if the babies can get up the silicone but the top would certainly let something so small out. I am pretty sure she is done. She ate readily the other day and looks thinner than before.

Thanks for the help.
