beardie with respiratory infections

robbeardies Jul 08, 2011 09:49 PM

I have a one and a half year old citrus het for hypo male that has his second respiratory infection in 4 months. I was wondering if anybody else has purchased this kind of morph from Rick at Herp Fascination and has any similiar problems with their dragon or looking for anybody else that has experience with their dragon having respiratory infections. Leo inhales real deep where you can see his sides go way in and then exhales with his mouth open. At times he has blown saliva bubbles out the side of his mouth. He eats very little but maintains or loses very little weight. He's 349 grams and about 16" long.

I would look into your own husbandry for the cause of respiratory infections. Recurring ones indicate there is a problem in the environment more than anything. Temps either too low, or humidity is too high or way too low or dust or some other irritant is causing the issue. Improperly treating past respiratory infections can also lead to flare ups, as the infection just never went away, just went into a more dormant state only to flare up if any sort of stress came into effect.

Detail out the husbandry practices you use, including cleaning schedule etc..since you own the dragon. Also, what treatments have vets prescribed to date?

Get dragon to vet asap, vet will most likely suggest Baytril for treatment.

Robb raise night-time temps using a heat lamp. red bulb... small wattage say 20-30 watts max

wrap the dragon or just throw a wash cloth over the dragon at night to keep it warm also

raise the temps in the enclosure for daytime

make sure it stays hydrated but hold off on bathing it for awhile
whatever size daytime heat-bulb you have... go up in wattage a little bit

ask Tracie (I gave you her contact info) what did she recommend for the dragon?
