Quarantine cage - questions

markg Jul 11, 2011 02:22 PM

I'm getting a hatchling JCP. I modified this large Kritter Keeper cage.

My question is about the perches. Looking at pics on this forum, is it better to have perches in an "X" shape or "Y" shape as opposed to single horizontal perches as I've done?

I think that falls more along the lines of a personal preference question rather than what the snake would prefer. I have three jcp and an irian jaya. The jcp have a home built cage with two horizontal rods and a platform. They use both, and will also be on the floor of the cage. The irian jaya has the fake bamboo with suction cups. He will use that and will also be found moving about on the floor of his cage. Basically I guess whatever you feel like using will be fine by the snake as far as shape goes. Hope it helps.

Those critter keepers are too small to be heated with an overhead light, it is going to get very warm and dry in there. You are better off heating one end (1/4-1/3 of the enclosure) with an under tank heater (such as a 3 or 4 inch heat tape on a thermostat set to (88-91F) so he can thermoregulate. Good luck.

The light is 7 watts and works fine in the warm room. But I agree with you, and I ended up using Flexwatt. Easier to heat multiple small cages with one strip and safer for small cages like you said.
