couperi hatchlings

sethsmith Jul 13, 2011 04:14 PM

Congrats to everyone with successful dry hatchlings this year.

I have two clutches hatched! First pip was 115 days and last was
120 days.1 egg died early on but other then that a 100% hatch rate.25 Eggs were kept on verm and perlite mix and temps were mostly mid 70s. First hatch was all rt and second was mostly
black phase( my favorite!]with a few rt's.Now to wait for first shed then get them to eat.
Thanks to all for advice and support.

Wow, that's a beautiful bunch of babies! Congratulations! I find either coloration of Indigos stunning. Thank you so much for sharing your pictures! I never realized that the black morphs didn't share the baby stripes that the red-throats possess.

One day, I dream of having a red-throat as a classroom pet. I find that the color contrast highlights their beautiful and innocent eyes, a feature that helps win average non-snake-loving people over. Their faces are just so... personable. I don't quite know how to put this, but their alert and focused stare, paired with their large eyes and round pupils seems to mirror the type of aesthetic that an artist would use in designing a 'good-guy' character. The cat-slit pupils my common boa has always seems to put people off, despite is calm and docile demeanor.

Wow, I went off topic. Please excuse my ramblings, these were just my musings while looking at your lovely babies' pictures.

Congratulations! Was this first time breeding for females? Anything special done to achieve two large fertile clutches?

sethsmith Jul 15, 2011 06:22 PM

Thanks! The RT babies came from a female that has given me clutches this will be the third year in a row w about a 70%
hatch rate prior. The black phase clutch is the first time
breeding her. The only thing I did different was to add perlite
with the verm.I have an old styrfom incubator that sits on top
of the fridge by an open window. I try to keep temp mid 70s but
There was fluctuations between 70 to 80 degrees and I did cut back on the feeding due to an eggbound female last year and Ive started giving occasional vitamin supplements.

Gosh!,......that clutch looks absolutely incredible!

I remember seeing some speckled hatchlings back in the very late 60's that an older kid had for sale among other types of snakes he had at his parents house. At something like a whopping $10 bucks or so a piece I couldn't quite afford it back then though being only about 9 years old myself and had to settle on a huge 7 foot Yellow Ratsnake that he also had to sell that was just a bit more in my price range..LOL!. Yes, those were entirely different times my friends..

I owned several young adult Indigos around that same time period in the 5-6 foot range, but seeing those killer speckled youngster's there with the red throats bring me back many decades instantly..HAHA!!

A big CONGRATULATIONS on those regal little gems!
