JCP feeding question

FishBone7001 Jul 14, 2011 02:09 AM

I am new jcp owner, i have a little guy hatched last December I belive. I have done a fair amount of research w/regards to scenting rats and getting them to switch over. The question I havent seen many opinions on is weather its better/easier to try to switch him over now while hes young, to rat pups? Or would it be better to feed him mice until hes big enough for weanling/small rats as is typical(for my boas at least...) Or does it matter?

je is ravenous, he has no problem eating hopper/small mice, instantly takes them, once a week, first time was live and since f/t. The one time I offered a rat, he recoiled & looked at it the same way my kids look at broccoli.

I had some issues switching one of mine early on. What I have found to be successful is my thawing method.

I use a 5 gallon bucket for feedings. I thaw both rats and mice in the water so it all kinda marinates together. If you have other snakes that are eating rats this will be a good way to work it. If not, start working on those rat pups. Feeding 8 mice to an adult JCP is a bit painful on the wallet!

I think the thawing method sounds best from what I've read. I do have other snakes feeding on various things from mice to rats. So you think its best to try to switch him rats as soon as possible then, and not wait until hes bigger?

Yes, switch him as soon as possible. The longer you wait the harder it will be.
