Guinea Pigs vs.Rabbits

BurmaBoy Jul 19, 2011 12:43 PM

Long time lurker...former poster here. I have thinned my collection down to almost nil, so I hardly ever stop in anymore.
I do have a question though, so it was time to sign back in.

I reecently couldnt pass up a good buy on some enormous guinea pigs. Bigger than what is sold as a small rabbit.
However, my male albino burm wont eat them. He actually struck at one this weekend, but spit it out.
He'll eat whole chickens, f/t medium rabbits, but wont touch guinea pigs.
I was hoping I could get him to switch to gp's because they cost a whole lot less than rabbits.

This is my only snake that wont take guinea pigs.Even when I starved him.
Any ideas?

You can try the usual tricks of scenting with a rabbit. Rub the bag the rabbit came in all over the GP or just try scenting with the rabbit itself. This "prey item" discussion came up last night on web radio show that a Burm Junkie might listen to... Some snakes just won't eat certain things. I have several burms that only eat poultry and they thrive on that diet...so that's what they get. Sometimes you just can't make them eat something that they don't want. Sometimes, they magically go back to eating rabbits or rats or whatever when they're ready for a change. I guess the jist of all this is...try your best to scent but if it doesn't work, then it just doesn't work and deal with it.

Been down that raod with the scenting thing. Scented with rabbits, and chickens. I guess I just have a fussy eater. Out of all the snakes I've owned, and the ones I still own, this is my only fussy eater.
