I think it might be a rat snake or some kind of black racer, but not sure. It knotted up when I took the pic which was weird, is that a defense mechanism? I live in Nashville, TN.

Black Ratsnake (Pantherophis obsoletus)
They scrunch up like that when they are nervous.

Thanks for the answer, I kinda thought it was.
Nice picture--of a black rat snake,I think it is a defence mechanism-to make themselves look like a branch,I think its neat.I've seen some other snakes do it,but not nearly as pronouced as a black rat.
