taming a juvie

janiam03 Jul 20, 2011 08:00 PM

two weeks ago i adopted a juvenile beardie from a rescue tank at the pet store. i dont know its age, but its about five inches nose to vent if thats any indicator.
i bought a beardie because i heard they make great pets and like to be held, etc.
the one i bought however, will sit on my hand for a few minutes then jet across the room to hide, or leap off my hand regardless of how high off the ground it is. the jumping concerns me because i dont want it to hurt itself.
then when i put it away, it goes into its hide like it was violated.
im feeling like i made the wrong decision.
does any one have any tips, suggestions, or words of encouragement?

Let him really get used to his cage for a wile. Then after he is used to it and out more slowly start handling him. If he likes to jump sit on the floor so it's a smaller drop if he does jump. Also when you do hold him just hold him don't pet or touch him. Just let him sit there and get used to that. Them once he feels comfortable with that then you can pet or touch him more but just a little at a time. I hope that helps some. I know there are people who know way more then me but that should bena good start.
