Blue Tongue Skink Diet...

ChrisErica Jul 22, 2011 03:05 PM

I have a blue tongue skink male that only eats frozen thawed fuzzy mice. He gobbles about 2 every 5 days or so. I asked someone that raises skinks if that's a good idea and he said yes because of the calcium in the bones. I'm a little concerned because the skink doesn't get any greens at all, but it never really did because prior to the fuzzies all it ate was dog food. I must admit he looks robust with no health issues.

I would get him on a proper diet. A mix of greens, fruit with some insects should be offered. Too many pinky mice can end up causing obesity and other issues over time. Pinky mice are alright once in awhile, no more than one or two a month.

I suggest not offering food for a couple days then offer finelly chopped greens, with a few superworms or silkworms put on top to catch his attention. I have also found the crested gecko powders, mixed with water and sprinkled ontop of greens, entices BTS's to eat eagerly. Or at last my two male BTS's ate greens with much more interest when I added this.

I understand picky eaters.
I have a male Bluey as well, mine won't eat anything live. He had a superworm stick its pointy little front legs into his nostrils once, and now, anything that moves, he refuses to eat it. So, if he is going to eat any bugs at all, I have to kill them myself before I even attempt to feed it to him. As far as greens, I have found mixing some collard greens with a scrambled egg works out fine for me. Blueys seem to all go bonkers for scrambled eggs, and it is healthy for him. Or you could mix it with a little of the canned dogfood. (I reccommend Blue brand canned dogfood.) You could always try that. And if fuzzies are his favorite meal, then still give him one or two every once and a while. As far as fruit, I have never had a problem getting my picky eater to gobble down some Mango, or Blueberries. So, you might want to try that. But, I do reccommend that you at least get him to eat greens and fruit, protein is protein, if it is insects (which don't have as much as those fuzzies anyhow) or mice, or eggs, or dogfood.
