Beardy skin rot???

reptilesrock Jul 24, 2011 12:25 PM

Hey all,

I have had a baby beardy at home now from the pet store I work at trying to get him eating and growing. I noticed today when I had a look at him that his skin under his chin (the beard when he's older) is discolored and brownish in colour. When I felt it, it seemed almost hard and crusty like it was rotted. So far, I right away put polysporin on it, but is there anything else I should do to treat it???

I would make sure its not just dirt/insect juice that has dried on the beard. Soaking in luke warm water then carefully brushing the area with a soft toothbrush should remove it.

If it persists, I suggest getting a vet to look at it. It could be several different things, including fungal or bacterial...only way to know for certain is for a vet to take a scrapping and examine in the lab.

Thanks for the input, I soaked him in warm water and gently massaged it and eventually it come right off easily. I think it was just some dried up food on his chin. I feel better now that its gone. Thanks again.

GLad it was just dirt, much easier to 'treat' that than a fungal issue. From the location and color I expected it stood a good chance of being just dirt or dried food.
