Captive Breeding Crotalid Programs

Gsc Jul 24, 2011 01:37 PM

I know there's not a ton of captive bred rattlers (other than your regular faire) availiable because the venomous market is so limited. Many of the "CB" babies you see for sale are actually captive born from a wc female. There's a handful of devoted keepers who are breeding 'em. My colubrids pay the mouse bills but crotalids are where my true passion lies.

The forum is dead so I figured I'd post some of my animals. Enjoy everyone and be safe!

I think they are bred quite a bit more than it appears but because there is a limited market value as you say they aren't showcased online very often and yes they certainly aren't bred large scale. But many people here in AZ breed regularly and gift their offspring to friends and other crote enthusiasts.

I have developed quite the passion for crotes in the last few years as well. I have a couple projects, one which I think I only have a few weeks to see if it went well. I won't elaborate now but if it happens I'll post pics.

Beautiful animals and thank you for sharing!

Crots have long been my passion as well though I've resisted keeping any. I have considered getting a single lepidus but would need to make some major changes in the man cave before doing so.

Great Pics! I am jealous! I currently own one wild caught Viridis Viridis (Prairie Rattler)and am new to hots. Where I live there is no hots training available and buying/selling hots is illegal however keeping up to 4 wild caught is legal. That really makes breeding difficult. I would love to breed Samantha (my rattlers name) however cant without capture of another viridis. Also I have no way to id her sex so that complicates things as well. Any advice for a new crotalus owner with no hots training avail? Some helpful info... I am 30 years old so I am not some kid playing with fire. I have Sam in a 30 gal locking top snake terrarium that has a padlock on it. The 30 gal is sitting inside a identical 40 gal snake terrarium also with a padlock top. She is not my only snake, in fact I breed mice to feed my snake addiction :D. Just looking from EXPERIENCED advice. Thank you!
