My first clutch of black tailed cribos started hatching yesterday. 15 eggs were laid on 4/7, which I incubated in my converted refrigerator/incubator on moistened perlite at 75-76 degrees for what looks like about 107 days. None of the eggs died during incubation, so hopefully they'll all hatch. Four are out so far with 11 left to go. The ones that have emerged so far are vigorous, beautiful, and quite calm for baby black tails. I'm super excited about them to say the least. Attached are a few crummy pictures that I took before I separated them.

Hope everyone is having a good season.

The very existence of flamethrowers means that sometime, somewhere, someone said to themselves..."You know, I really want to set those people over there on fire...but I'm just not close enough to get the job done."

Well done! When are the Texas hatchlings due?

herbivorous Jul 27, 2011 07:08 PM

Thanks Steve. The Texans probably aren't going to hatch for another 4-5 weeks. The eggs were laid on 5/13, so it was a pretty late clutch. I've got a few Eastern eggs due to hatch in another week and another clutch of black tailed cribos a week after that, so I'll be busy until then. The Texans are what I'm really waiting for, though. This is going to be my first successful year on those.

Those are some beautiful baby Easterns you have, by the way.

Big congrats! Do you have a weight on the babies?

herbivorous Jul 28, 2011 10:50 PM

Thanks. I don't actually have a weight on the babies. I may weigh some of them tomorrow. I've never actually done that with the hatchlings before. I had one Eastern Indigo hatch this afternoon as well, so it would be interesting to do a side by side comparison. The BTs appear to be just about as long but much more slender compared to the Eastern.

The last one came out this afternoon. 15 perfect babies altogether.

Congarats! Good luck on the texans, and I hope you have no problems getting them to start feeding.
