Suggestions for accomadations in AZ

Woodsnake Jul 28, 2011 03:52 PM

Looking for suggestions of hotels or the like to stay at while I will be herping in the Prescott area. I would even be willing to stay at casino/hotel. The amenities don't have to be spectacular but I would at least like to have internet access and decent cable TV. Also, would anyone have any idea if I would have a better chance of seeing more snakes in southern Arizona or areas near Prescott in mid September?

Comfort inn on the white spar!! Cheap, cable, breakfast... herping right across the street or behind it!

hmmm... september. I did not see that part... You should ask Lynum, he lives there so hes gotta know, but From experience I can tell you that in southern AZ like the Chirichauas and Catalinas or Santa ritas you can still find stuff at that time if the weather turns up right.
Road cruising can end up kinda cold sometimes but usually you can do some nice day walking.

Prescott could be tricky in late september but you should still have some luck. Southern Arizona would be better. But the best area to hit that time of year is Camp Verde. It is very close to Prescott but lower in elevation. Try the West Clear Creek area by the campground. Beautiful area, nice hiking, and herps will be out. Camp Verde also has nice accomadations within a few miles of the Clear Creek area.

hey man... I have herped that area quite a bit at several times of the year and have found a lot of reptiles but just was curious... How many pyro, cerberus, or diodophis have you found that low?? I have seen garters, diamondbacks and a common king on the road before it.

I found 1 AZ Mountain King about a mile north of Bull Pen Ranch. But that was the only one I saw in 10 years. I never did see any AZ Blacks in that area. As far as ringnecks I caught three in one outing down by the campground near the narrow creek area. Great area!

Not sure prescott, but if you go south and visit the Chiricahua Desert Museum area in Portal AZ/Rodeo NM area, check with Bob at the Museum. He has a lovely lodge down there.

If you try the Huachuca Mountains in SE Arizona be sure and check with the Forest Service as much of the mountians burned and almost all access is closed at this time. The fire also burned through part of my property but I have still seen a number of species in my yard. if I get a chance I will post some pictures.
