Hotels to stay at in or near Prescott AZ

Woodsnake Jul 28, 2011 04:10 PM

Looking for suggestions of hotels or the like to stay at while I will be herping in the Prescott area. I would even be willing to stay at a casino/hotel. The amenities don't have to be spectacular but I would at least like to have internet access and decent cable TV. Also, would anyone have any idea if I would have a better chance of seeing more snakes in southern Arizona or areas near Prescott in mid September?

I just realized you are the same guy that I replied to down below. The areas that I stated for the rosies are a lot lower than prescott in elevation and should be able to be observed at that time of year although its not optimal timing.

The key to being successful is knowing the means in which you have to use to observe them. Certain times Flipping is optimal and certain times you have to rely on finding them out and about.

Thank you for all of the information. Is there a better area to stay in other than Prescott? I tried looking on a map to see which would be most optimal to herp Bagdad to Hillside and the Harquahalas, etc.

Well, depends on what you plan on herping the most really... I don't herp prescott in that time of year because my favorite areas to herp are optimal during spring really. So If I was going to pick an area for that time of year, I would pick somewhere closer to wickenburg because I would be closer to rosy Habitat which would provide more field time rather than drive time. If you were in Wickenburg, there is a really good spot within 30 minutes drive from there. (there are closer but the spot I am talking is more ideal) You can either just hit up vulture mine road and search for some good habitat, or connect to eagle eye road and get the turnoff to the observatory in the harquahalas. I recommend you have a truck, someone told me a car can handle it and my car did not like it. lol
If you were going to stay somewhere in southern az, I would pick Tucson because you can try your luck at the South Maricopa mountains or go check some of the more low lying areas in the santa ritas, or catalinas. I personally never go to the Huachucas or chirichauas at that time of year because they are higher elevation and sometimes can be cold... Let me know if you make a decision because I can hone in on where your staying and give you some cool areas to check, I have lived and herped these areas since I was a little kid.

I would like to speak to you more about this but the forum here is a little problematic do to the wait time between posts. Would you consider emailing me with your phone number so that I could ask you all the questions and get your opinions without waiting for answers? My email address is CWoodcock@Seminolecountyfl.gov. I would really appreciate it.
