The White Leopard!

benA Jul 30, 2011 09:37 AM

The White Leopard goes public! This is our newest hatchling. We thought that no more eggs from 2010 would hatch, but to our surprise this little one hatched last week - and what a surprise! A totally new color pattern, dark spots within a nearly white shell background and white skin. We'll see if that changes as he grows, but he's a keeper for sure!

Very nice tortoise! Congratulations.

or maybe call him a "snow leopard?"

looks like he has dark eyes, so not an albino, huh? do you think it might be the same type of anomaly as the "ivory sulcata?" i suppose this must be very exciting yet frustrating for breeders of animals who must wait so many years to see if they can perpetuate a variation!

Thanks for the message. I really know so little about the genetics and therefor don't know how common this is. Maybe he will end up just being a little lighter then the others. Hopefully he will stay super light. P. Pardalis Leopards, in my experience, tend to be darker, which is something that I like about them. Typically the light ones are the Babcocki, whick is another reason I am excited about this guy. I will try and post photos as he gets older.

If raise properly... it will look no different than any of the others... maybe a lighter but would look no different unless placed aside another.

I'd keep it.

Occasionally I hatch out a hypomelanistic leopard tortoise (one or two a year). Depending on how they are raised they can grow to be a very white tortoise or dark tortoise. The attached pictures are an example. I have never kept any of my hypos and raised them up for new breeders so I don’t know what the offspring would look like.

I'm looking to purchase a breeding pair or group of leopards. Do you have any or have anybody that does ?
