Alternatives to Rats & Mice

I was wondering, since my Macklot's Python tries to eat anything that smells like a mouse can I use a mouse to add that scent to pieces of raw chicken? If the snake actually ate that would it lead to a healthier life?

My guess is your Macklot's would take the chicken w/out scenting! If you wanna do birds, try quail! They're cheap!

I'm actually trying to find a source for large frozen chickens.

We wouldn't have 6 and a half billion people if you had to be beautiful to get laid.

Probably hehe. I tried to contact this guy http://larsonrabbitry.com/

several times about buying small rabbits from him, from what I hear rabbits are most nutritious. I'm going to try the quail.

Funny story I was in petco and I found this lady sitting with a bunch of rabbits so I was trying to ask her in a subtle way how I would buy some rabbits to raise for my snake, I didn't realize that was a no no. Its not like I enjoy watching a snake eat a live animal... But yea "rabbit people" are crazy o_o She started foaming at the mouth, rabies I guess :P lol

I have quite a few snakes that will take chicken parts quite willingly. Give some wings a try.

Yeah, true story. I've found most snakes prefer poultry to rodents. (Maybe saying "most snakes" is too general, but a lot of them do.) I had a picky burm who I'd fatten up using chicken drumsticks. However, the reason snakes don't suffer from many health problems like vitamin deficiencies is because they eat whole animals. By feeding animal parts to them without everything else, they would still probably live a long healthy life, but then again maybe they wouldn't.

If you want to vary the diet I'd recommend what other users are saying, offer quail or chicks. You can get them from feed stores cheaper than rats. Feeding poultry parts from the grocery store will work, but personally I wouldn't make a long term habit out of doing it.

Cheers,

Terry

You have the right idea in terms of giving your snake a varied diet. However you don't want to make a habit of feeding just parts of animals (chicken legs, fish fillets, etc). Snakes get most of their nutrients from the organs and GI tracts of the species they eat. The muscle is just calories without a lot of nutrition. Occasional chicken parts won't hurt your snake but they will not make it healthier either.

If you want to give your snake a more interesting and possibly more nutritious diet there are lots of options most of which are available from feeder rodent suppliers.

Ex...Mice, Rats, Chicks, Quail, Soft Furred Rats, Gerbils, Rabbits, etc.
