Green water question

DSavickey Aug 19, 2011 04:30 PM

Is it true that greens are the largest water snakes in the USA.. Whats the biggest green you have seen.. Any pics of these monster green water snakes.
PS- I remember being about 12-13 years old down Fl everglades. My brother and I saw a huge green water that was about as thick as a coke can. We threw it on shore and it crawled to fast and trying bitting us and went into the water. Must have been 5 ft.

I believe the water moccassin is the biggest. I've read that green behavior is different from other water snakes, that they puke on you as a defense rather than biting. Cool story though.

I'm pretty sure that the OP meant the genus Nerodia when he asked about the largest Water Snake. Cottonmouths aren't technically Water Snakes, but pit vipers. I've seen Browns(N. taxispilota)that easily topped five feet in length, longer than all but a few Cottons, although my FL Green is heavier built than any of the Browns I've owned.
