When Ants Attack!

CMcKinna Aug 27, 2011 12:51 PM

I was keeping my crickets outside in my shed to appease the wife She has a bug phobia and didn't want them in the house. But after a couple days they were attacked by regular black house ants.

Does anybody know a way I can prevent this?

I live in San Diego, so the cricket farm is 5 miles away from my house and allows me to get crickets really cheap. I'f I'm unable to house larger amounts outside, I'll have to resort to buying them 15 at a time from Petco... which is criminal.

If you keep your crickets in a tank, you could try putting the entire tank into a larger shallow pan of water to create a moat that the ants will hopefully drown in. Also, you can try applying some double-faced tape completely around the tank slightly above the water level of the pan, in a wide band, to provide a second level of defense that acts similarly to roach motels.

If the cricket enclosure sits on a table with legs, try standing the legs in containers of water.

Put out a lot of ant traps, especially in their paths.

Disrupt as many of the paths possible, that the ants use to reach your crickets.

A ring of vaseline mixed with boric acid powder which any pharmacy sells not only prevents them from entering the crickets bin but also kills the ants.
