lab type rodent breeding cages

GG_HERPS Aug 31, 2011 06:49 PM

Ok this may sound odd but here goes. My wife loves me having the snakes and lizards hates hates hates the rodents. However she has given me permission to set up a small breeding colony for feeders. Does anyone know a good place to buy the lab style rodent breeder cages? These are the only cages she is comfortable with. Nothing homade will due as she knows I am not a carpenter and does not trust my abilities ha ha. I have seen some on bean farm but $68.00 each is just a little outside my price range.
Thank you all for your help.

While raising mice for feeders I used the rodent caging from Big Apple, here's a link to their page. http://www.bigappleherp.com/Big-Apple-Rodent-Cages#

I loved them for their ease of cleaning and safety for the mice.

Believe me when I tell you that you do not have to be a carpenter in order to build a very nice rodent rack. Its actually much easier than you might think.

If your wife is going to be truly insistent on you getting something that is not homemade then you might want to consider getting a level from Freedom Breeder. You can always add on to it or just use it as a one level set up.

If you need plans on building a rodent rack just let me know. You can even get all the wood cut Home Depot. All you have to do is staple on the hardware cloth and screw it together. Very simple.

I think I have her convinced to let me build one I just have to show her it is escape resistant. I would love some plans if you have them I do not need anything super large maybe 5 or 6 tubs. thank you

I keep my mice in 10 gallon aquariums (bought used at yard sales) covered with ¼ inch mesh hardware cloth. I weight the tops down with 2 to 4 jars of water or else some large rocks, supported by large cake cooling racks.

I recently saw some interesting instructions for a snake rack, that might be modifiable for rodents, on the Cage & Habitat Design forum.
