Sanderson Snake Days

tanks Sep 16, 2011 03:38 PM

ok its starting to come together, the first annual snake days of west texas. The event will be held 15, 16, 17 of June 2012 in Sanderson texas. A lot of the event is still up in the air but its coming together. We are looking at live music, field trips, gues st speakers. The event will be a fund raiser and surely fun for everyone. We will have raffles, silent auctions, swap meet, etc. We will be doing a clean the highway project and a can contest to see who can bring in the most cans for recycling.
Check the web site and if you can donate items for auction, raffle or time please let me know. The site is basic but check back often as we will be adding events and items on a regular basis.

Stay tuned to the site, Friday the 15 is a half day meet and greet with a possibly a lecture, and event registration. Saturday the 16th we will have vender booths, a list of lectures will be conducted and a daytime field trip. We are trying to secure private property for night time hunting for Friday and Saturday night for those wanting it. We are talking about doing a Saturday catered fund raiser dinner. Saturday night is reptile hunting and trash pick up along the cuts, the person with the most cans will receive a prize. We are having a photo contest of west Texas wildlife and landscapes with 2 catagories, best of show and a judged catagory with prizes to be anounced. Sunday will be judging. Sunday will be a swap meet and reptile sale, we will be having raffles and a auction as well. Booths will be available for corporate sponsers and venders at a very nominal fee. This event is truly a non profit fund raiser.

Now the hard part we need donations and help to pull such an event off, we would like to have participation from all of the states herp association. Please contact me with input and help, this is our event and we need everybody to help. We can all put our differences aside for 3 days out of the year.

How about a fake snake contest? Actually two contests. One for the best looking fake snake, ie people bring painted rubber snakes to be judged. Then another contest where we put a bunch of fakes out on the cuts and have prizes for who can find the most, who finds the most well hidden one, who finds the biggest one, smallest one, etc.

What about oldest I still have my first one I ever found june 2 1988 call me a pack rat but it was funny then and still is.

Aaron Sep 19, 2011 04:17 AM

Oldest, sure why not. I saved several of the ones I found too. My oldest would probably be 1998. I was out in '96 but I don't think I found any good ones 'til '98. Was your's a painted rubber snake or something else? I found a kielbasa once but I think Steve Wit ate it.

All you youngsters ought to wait to bring your fake snakes to the snake meet in 2025. Maybe then some of the old timers will be too old to come. I still have (lying around somewhere) the infamous "graybanded kingstick" from somewhere around 1978 or 1979. I "caught" it on the south side of highway 90 on the Osman Canyon cut 78 yards east of the bridge 4.5 feet up from road level. The critter was so good that I actually started to reach for it before I recognized it as a stick. By the way, if anyone cares, I consider it a "locality" specimen. Sad thing is that I have not been able to pair it up (locality) since. LOL

Thats the problem with society no body is green, no recycling. I have non that i have found, i move them to the next cut for someone else. We must start recycling more in todays economy. hahaha
