2011 Captive Born Greens - Photos

karlhermann Sep 17, 2011 05:50 AM

This is the second time that my female green (Anna Banana) produced babies. The first time nearly 90% of the babies were still born. That was a very difficult event to swallow. Anna Banana tends to carry her babies to nearly 200 days post ovulation. I checked her about midnight the night before she dropped. It was day 196 or 203 depending on which swelling event I counted from. I told my wife that I didn't expect any live babies and I was very concern for Anna Banana's health. At 4:30 AM the following morning this is what I found. It was one of the greatest days of my 30 plus years with herps. Here are some photos.

Mr. Old School has officially seen this post, but I think he is afraid to post.

I can see you today with a smile from ear to ear! It's a great day in Minnesota!

Karl,
Excellent results this year, very glad things worked out so well. As I stated in my e-mail earlier, I believe that when dealing with the captive reproduction of green anacondas, it is one of the rarer and more difficult snake species to successfully breed in captivity. Your dedication was rewarded, and it really doesn't get any better than this.

I have attached a photo of one of my females eating one of her ova from the 2001 litter. As you can obviously verify, I have never seen or heard of a female that did not ingest the unfertilized ova and / or stillborn young after parturition. Definitely a useful survival adaptation and strategy.

Again, congratulations and now comes the really exciting part of raising up those neos.
