Yes, an awesome post Dan. That's some great habitat you have access to. Too bad to see the destroyed turtles. Road killed? It looks like the painteds have a healthy population anyway. Thanks for the window view.

Of course, sweet looking hognose and excellent rearfangs shot!

Dan,

That was an awesome post, man. It always sucks to see the turtles getting run over by vehicles. I was, fortunately, able to help a box turtle cross a highway on the way back from finding that rattlesnake I saw last Monday. It always feels good to see one get across the road successfully! As for the hognose, I'm a little jealous of the find, LOL. I've been looking for a live specimen for years! Today, I'm going to an area where I've seen a few roadkill specimens over the years, so hopefully luck will be with me.

I guess rattlesnakes seem to be much more common where you are. Here, on the East Coast, they are a special treat that you usually have to go deep into the woods to find.

The porcupine was awesome looking too.

That hognose was drooling like a St. Bernard, LOL!

Thanks Justin!

The prarie rattlesnakes are common here. It never gets old seeing them, but seeing a timber or any other kind WOULD be a real treat.

Dan,

That Hognose looks huge. It's very sad about those turtles though. I like the aphid shot and the porcupine pics.

As always, nice post!

Dan,

Now you are just showing off! LOL
Those are some awesome pics. Love the dripping saliva on the Hognose.
Were the Paints nesting communally, or just in a general area? I'm curious about that.

Thanks,
Matt

Thanks Matt!

The turtles nest along side of the railroad tracks in that area & a bunch of them nest in this one spot. The test holes & nests in the pics are all within a few steps from each other. Now that I think about it I've seen turtles walking along the tracks further down, but never nesting, I've only found them nesting along this 100ft or so of track. Pretty cool.
