new ackie with PROLAPSE!

Drizztice Sep 28, 2011 04:50 PM

so I recently bought a pair of ackies....these guys were sold as a proven breeding pair. Saw em...had the enclosure...FR lent me a hand with some advice as per the UV lighting...

So Ive had them since Sunday...and I fed them on monday everything was cool humidity good...1 foot of dirt..etc etc etc. 130 bask spot .yada yada yada..

last night I get home and the male is dragging his intestine around ( rectal prolapse) so I got it back in with some sugar water, prep h and then some KY...this morning I go to check him out..he had some urine on his cloaca so I cleaned it off with some warm water..all was fine until I put him back in his cage...i watched as he climbed to the top of the cage applied pressure and then prolapsed his damn rectum again...this time I called the vet and went in at 1130am...

the doc did the normal exam and then checked his the ackies cloaca he said I needed an x ray/ stool sample/ purse stitch/ antibiotics and the stitches come out on Monday morn....

( he also gave me a boat load of bad husbandry advise...won't give it all to you but it included a screen top, heat blanket, and getting rid of the flood lamps...I ignored this stuff....)

so the reason I'm posting this is to find out if my little guy will make it out of this alive ( of course opinions only....I know u can't see the future)...I belive the previous owner had power fed him, was lax in monitoring humidity levels, and only low temped him with no high level temps...he also had him on bark....I figured impaction...doc looked at the x ray...no impaction.....so if u have dealt with this please let me know how u made out....and....if u haven't please chime in and tell me what u think I can do to keep it from happening again..

I have no experience with prolapse issues. My opinion is this is probably why this pair was available for sale. Why would someone sell a "proven breeding" pair of ackies versus keeping then, breeding them, and selling babies? These guys were probably, in my opinion, available because of these health concerns. Also if they were kept in crap conditions like you say, its hard to believe they were consistently producing eggs.
Personally, I think its best to start with babies and raise them up yourself. But my experience is limited. I started out with one baby ackie, then got two more babies a month after. I just got a second clutch of eggs from them on saturday. Besides the ackies, I have an argus, a baby peach throat, a juvie peach throat, and a mangrove. So I'm still pretty new to keeping and breeding monitors.

I actually think this prolapse is a first occurrence for this guy the vet gave him a good bill of health otherwise and feels that the humidity is a major factor. The female is actually pregnant as we speak the seller was moving out of the country and couldn't take em with him...so I'm S.O.L. as far as a refund is concerned but I'm not looking for one I enjoy care for these guys and consider it a good thing to basically do a rescue.

thanks for your input though

Theres a real fancy trick this old old old old old reptile breeder once taught me. With prolapses, cold water, put back in, and put a snoopy bandaid on it. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm it works, not need for stitches etc. Bandaid does that same thing only you can do it.

No matter how its treated, you now must find out if your the cause, or it was pre-exsisting. good luck

hey fr thanks again for chiming in! I haven had him long enough for me to be the cauze he has only had one meal since I've had him..lol....but I know that husbandry was the cause and I'm trying my best right now to establish the best for this guy any advice as per that?

thanks
