CBB Nile Monitor Question

timmah Sep 29, 2011 01:40 AM

Is there a lot of people in the USA that breed captive niles? I see many adds that say the niles are US captive bred born niles, not imports but is there any way to tell per say? or do you guys know any legit places to get niles CBB because I am done with import crap

Thanks

Yes, there are many ways to tell, and all are common sense.

No magic or trickery.

If the niles in question is the same price range as other pet trade niles, its wild caught. If its from a source thats normally selling imports, then its wild caught.

If the seller does not have and will not provide proof that is captive bred and hatched, like a series of pictures showing caging, breeding adults, incubation, etc, then its wild caught.

The simple fact that NO ONE is breeding them. Which means, zero are hatched on a regular basis. What are the real changes a dealer is selling real captive hatched.

If you take it to the vet and it has african parasites, its wild caught. This is a very good way, only it reveals the truth after the monitor is acquired.

Good luck

I figured that was the case but I wasn't 100% sure. We don't have any reptile vets anywhere around my town either for parasites.

Is it a bad idea to self administer Flagyl, Panacur,Droncit just to be sure the lizard is dewormed?

I am going to a show this weekend, hopefully trying to pick up a nice monitor.

In a Monitor. I thought I remembered your name from the issues with the water a few weeks ago. I am sorry that it died on you. that said I was wondering why you would go from a water to a nile. As someone who works with waters and has had niles I found that odd. While both species can be aggressive captives niles are a bit more defensive and nervous than waters although they are smaller in size (weight wise they are similar in how long they can get.).
I googled some of your past posts here on kingsnake to see what makes you tick so to speak and to gage what kind of experience you have with reptiles.
Although they were from 2 years ago and people can learn a lot and gain much experience in 2 years I found your questions on venomous snakes and anacondas to be a bit spooky but typical of someone with not-so-much experience with reptiles. I do not mean that to be insulting (all of us were inexperienced at what we do at some point and no one knows everything about all animals.) and with that said I commend you on asking for advice before jumping into to something reptile wise that could be over your head .
some of your older posts in reference to falling asleep on the couch while handling reptiles concern me and make me wonder what you are looking for in a monitor. Monitors are not lap dogs if that is what you are looking for you should get a cat or a dog. Niles and waters get large very quickly and require enclosures the size of small rooms and while having a pool with them is not necessary being that both animals occupy a riparian habitat they do much better with a pool and certainly exhibit more of their potential behaviors. You should take these points into consideration before you purchase an animal you may not want or be able to handle down the road. I am certainly not trying to discourage you but trying to make sure you know what you are getting into before you do. with the right research you may find one of the smaller captive bred species more suitable.

It is true, my sav used to sleep on me while I was crashed on the couch back some time ago. I admit it was stupid but I felt comfortable with him not biting me. He actually would come out of the cage and climb up to me. I could put my fingers all over his mouth and face and he wouldn't bite. That being said I sure I am not the only person who lays out on the couch with their monitor. The asain water monitor I got made me rethink parasites and such, thats why I was asking about self admistering some dewormer and such to a baby as all the vets around my area won't mess with reptiles. I was also venting because there are SO MANY companies out there saying their monitors are CBB and I am sure 99% of them are lying. I never felt good about imports but for the most part unless I am paying thousands of dollars I am going to have to get a farmed baby at best. I actually wanted a Nile in the start but this is a project I was working with my girlfriend and she is just starting off on reptiles in the last year or so. This time around I am getting what I want and she is just gonna have to deal.
