Male or female?

dav46 Oct 03, 2011 08:08 AM

Posting some pics here of my Salvator in hopes someone with some salvator experience can help with sexing my monitor. Got him/her last December as a 11-12 inch hatchling (head to end of tail). I don't have another salvator to compare this one to and at times I think I see the hemipene bulges and other times I dont. Here are some pics 2 of which are vent shots and as you can see one looks as if there are bulges then the other doesn't.
Any input is appreciated.

Hi, the third pic down looks male, the other two shots??????
I`ll give you a tip that often works for me; hold the monitor`s vent area into the shade, so you can see more clearly the hemipenal bulges if they`re there, in bright light, not so easy to tell (for me, at least)...
He`s a very nice looking V.s. macromaculatus, good work!!

Thanks for the advice and feedback I will try the shade because it is hard to tell. Yeah I have had salvators in years past and always amazing how fast they grow if given food, heat and space to do so. Here is a pic from last Dec-Jan time frame, what a difference!

Hi again, yes, it`s hard to believe how fast they go from baby to subadult in the blink of an eye, and l think V. salvator`s are among the prettiest looking varanid species, a pure delight to keep!

It's a male, agree.

thanks jaburokas. It is very weird though because not sure if it is the position of the monitor in that 3rd pic but seems bulges appear in that photo but in person they are very hard to detect. I will have to take another look but first need to wait for all the deep scratches on my arms and hands to settle down a bit. Looks like I washed up with barbed wire! haha

He`ll shred you to pieces, wear at least a thick, long sleeved shirt!! (If only I would take my own advise).....
