Sexual dimorphism in Sanzinia

simias Oct 07, 2011 05:51 PM

Does anyone have any reliable information on sexual dimorphism in Madagascar Tree boas (Sanzinia madagascariensis/Boa manditra?) The conventional wisdom is that females get much bigger than males, and that the Mandarin western subspecies/morph is much larger than the Green eastern subspecies/morph. But very little published on this.

Anyone have the facts?

thanks

Here's some info....

As a side note, with every Sanzinia I've kept, the females were much larger and the males had larger spurs... every time.

thanks Doug. The Vence and Glaw paper doesn't really address size dimoprhism directly so I'm been gleaning info from breeders. Some people disagree that the mandarin voltany subsp. is larger overall than the green madagascariensis subsp. Your thoughts?

My experience is that Mandarins are bigger of the two species and Females are bigger than males. This must not always be the case if other breeders don't agree. However, it has been the case with every individual sanzinia I've worked with.

I have both and my Mandarins are far larger than the Greens. Females are much, much larger than the males. A couple of copulation pics but the smaller males should be evident.
