Star Tortoise Egg Laying

J-Cal Oct 10, 2011 12:39 PM

How long does it typically take between clutches for stars? I have a female indian star that laid 3 eggs on 9/10/2011, approx 30 days after introduction of the male. I am a veterinarian, and my dad was in the area with them so I radiographed both of my females (housed together with the male for about 80 days now), and the female who laid eggs last month has 3 more very calcified eggs. I radiographed her on 9/11/2011 and saw no signs of any more eggs, so I know this is a different clutch. She has an egg laying site ready, but seems really soon to be this gravid again. Is this typical?

Hi Justin,

I have observed intervals of 6-8 weeks between clutches in various species of Stars and Radiated Tortoises. I don't believe that it is too soon for your female to have newly formed eggs. I would expect she may lay that clutch by the end of the month or early in November.

Good luck with your group!
