Canoe trip in Congaree, SC

mattkau Oct 19, 2011 01:20 PM

My brother got married over the weekend and the friday before the wedding we all decided to take a canoe trip down the Congaree Creek. It was a nice day, maybe a little cool for a whole lot of herps, but we saw a few.

marbled salamander

a few eastern cottonmouths

a nice canebrake

and me with an intergrade rat snake that's seen better days

I'm just curious, how did you find the canebrake? Was it under cover or on the surface? I included a picture of a timber(canebrake) rattler I found in the same area(Richland County, SC).

That was an in situ shot. It was just curled up along a trail. I thought it was a nice one for that area.

It was definitely a pretty snake. Looks like a fairly young one, judging by the rattle? The picture I put on my previous reply to you was also off a trail within the national park. It's good to know the canebrakes and moccasins are still thriving in that area! I live in Greenville, SC and I do a lot of herping in the lower part of the state if you ever want to meet up to do some searching.

Thanks, but I actually forgot my camera. My dad took those pics. I would have gotten better ones as I got closer to the snakes. My brother got some good pics though.
