Stuck shed or ri?

Winith Oct 28, 2011 08:19 PM

I recently purchased a reticulated python and had her shipped to me. She's five foot long and arrived in seemingly good health. I noticed she had shed due to the stress of shipping and was making a hissing/whistle noise. I figured some of the shed is stuck on her nose so dismissed it as nothing seriouse. Over the last week, however, she's been pressing her nose against a corner of the cage and shaking as if trying to get out. She also urinates a little every night. She's always on the move and stops every now and then to rest. Eating fine. I have her in a reptiracks cage. Humidity: 65-70 Temp:80-87. Is it just a piece of shed or could it be mild ri?

don't remember retic temps off the top of my head, but I'm thinking a higher hot spot is needed, if s/he is eating still just focus on the husbandry, double then triple check it! I don't who you got him/her from, so you may have a bit of catch up to do. as long as s/he is eating/drinking normal, just do your best at home, but if s/he stop eating/drinking, looks thin, ect then its time to head to the vet! (though a parasite check is always a good idea on a new animal) Best of luck!

Retics are very active snakes and move around a lot. That pushing in the corner is normal along with lots of urination. Whistling while breathing is also common with retics. Be aware of wheezing with bubling mucas from the nostrils as that would be a RI. Though retics seem to seek cooler temperatures at times they seek out heat. I use under tank heating for mine and provide a hot spot of 90 degrees with the rest of the cage in the 70s. Bill

Thanks guys ... I've adjusted the temp a little. She's my first python, I usually stick to boas. After this last week and your guys input I'm convinced she was just adjusting to her new home. I've also upgraded her to rabbits and it calmed her down now that she gets a full belly. I take her out most days to get some exercise and satisfy her need to hunt and explore. Thanks again...
