Monitor Poop and Panacur

shottz Nov 07, 2011 03:42 PM

My ornate nile is feeding on 1 pinky per day at the moment and its poop is very running and not solid what so ever. It is Farm Bred so there is a chance for worms or internal parasites. Is the runny poop normal or would it hurt to give a 3 day treatment of granules Panacur just to be safe? Monitor is alittle over 3 months. Not lathargic or anything, everything SEEMS normal but the runny poop.

I'd suspect protozoans rather than worms. And for that, Panacur is not effective.

Well I didn't really think about it too much until I talked to a guy who had tree monitors. He said with wild caught animals and such that he always doses them with Panacur and Flagyl at the same time to insure if they had anything it would be gone. I did some reading and what I read it said that those drugs are not harmful if you give the right dose at the right times. It's hard to see how often his stool is runny because he usually goes in his water tub. The closest reptile vet is about 4 hour drive so I was thinking if I could self administer the panacur and flagyl myself it would save me a full day of driving to a vet. I know people are going to flame me for self administration instead of the Vet.

Yes, these drugs are safe if the animal is hydrated and if dose is given correctly. But it's quite easy to make a mess with calculations.

I have to warn you that Flagyl Panacur will control many kinds of parasites and even bacteria, but very far from cleaning everything. It is a good profilatic protocol for WCs thou, as it will "wash out" the bulk of the parasites.

its a farm hatched nile but I still think I am going to do it if i can find the correct dosage charts. The little guy is beefy active and is actually not super agressive. It tail whips but once I pick it up it does fine. If anyone has a good link that provides the correct dosage chart per weight of reptile or something I would appreciate it. I found one but I am unsure of how good it is. I also don't know exactly the best place to order it from. I read online that the reptile stuff that you can buy is low quality and does no good. got to love the internet

Here is the link to the one i found if anyone can take a look at it and see.

What else are you feeding? Pinkies will cause runny stools because they are full of milk and not much else.

shottz Nov 07, 2011 10:12 PM

rat pinkies, unshelled snails and dubia roaches as side snacks.

Mabey I am just thinking too much into this and I am making it a problem instead of actually having a problem. I just thought being extra sure there is nothing by giving some panacur and Metronidazole. Not being able to get Metronidazole
without a RX prescription from vet kinda screws that though, although I can get generic Metronidazole through canada pharm.

if your monitor is healthy, why fix it. Its not broke.

And yes, pinks have very little roughage, so you will get runny stools. Feed your monitor fuzzies. Good luck

shottz Nov 08, 2011 01:11 AM

Fuzzies are a tad bit too big still. It has it's hands full with pinky rats, pinky mice are just about right but I have 600 pinky rats in the freezer vs only a hand full of pinky mice atm. Might have to order me some fuzzies and skip the pinky rats when its able to swallow them. It is growing at such a fast rate. Around doubled to tripled in size in the last month and a half.

My only concern I guess was peace of mind on the parasites. Being farm bred I know there is a good chance it has something. So if i adminstered the meds I could have a better peace of mind that the lizard is doing good. I have OCD about certain things, and it seem to wear off on husbandry and such things, which I guess is ok. I notice myself checking temps, humidity, soil moisture, and such a million times a day. I am also happy I got an amazing lizard that seems to be working well and I want to make sure it is healthy as possible.

i agree with FR. Onate monitors are very hardy and adjust well. if anything just leave it alone for a while untill it gets adjusted, and continue to feed it

Farm hatched is a another way of saying Wild Caught. No one farms them as you would never turn a profit. Even so, to echo what has already been said, if the animal is growing and progressing ok I would not treat it. I am pretty leery about meds like that when administered by a vet much less a keeper without any experience. It would be one thing if it was showing clear signs of a heavy parasite load but, it doesn't sound like that is the case.

I thought about it and I am going to take the advice given and not mess with something that doesn't need to be messed with.
