Black ratsnake??

derekdehaas Nov 11, 2011 03:25 PM

Last night I found a 3 or so foot black ratsnake healthy as can be and thick. I found him in my house here in upstate New York. Put him in a pillow case and just wondering if I can let it go during the temp in the 40's or so? I live in the country with creek and everything. Figured I should let it go and he can find a spot and sleep for the winter. Lemme know thanks. PS_ I don't keep and breed snakes and reptiles anymore so have not been on here for a bit over a year.

What's up Derek!??

Well, I don't think I would let him go until there was a bit of a warmer window of opportunity in the weather pattern. This would give the snake a better chance to find a suitable brumation spot rather than possibly getting caught in a place somewhere far less suitable where the temps might drop too much and too sudden.

If you google a ten day weather forecast you can choose a good time to do this.

Hope the snake does well bud,......

cheers, ~Doug

Hey man! I already checked the weather on here before seeing your reply. All this week will be in the 50's day time. I put him in the tub with paper towels I'll add water dish tomorrow. Hmm just maybe if he eats for me froxen thawed maybe I'll just keep him as the only snake as a wild caught in the house LOL! And my first wild caught lol...also I am not adding and heat pad to the snake since I want him as room temp along with what already been to whatever temp he was in I don't know how long he been in this house loose.

Hey Derek, sounds like he found a nice brumation site already LOL!! I wouldnt feed him, and just keep him somewhere cool in the house/basement/garage until spring and let him go. It may not want to eat even if you try warming him up.

Too late I let it go two days ago when it was in the 50's Found a two inch hole in the ground and I let him go around that hole and just took the hole. I didn't think he'll eat anyway.

He or she will probably be fine. Hell, I was in my treestand hunting on Saturday and had a box turtle crawl by my tree. (Maryland). First time I have ever seen that!!

Yeah, I did the same thing with a black rat baby last year. Neighbor found it and the weather was too cold in my opinion to let him go. I brumated him in a seperate room from my other snakes and let him go in my backyard in the early spring. No harm done. Although, if you do have a good warm window, like Doug had said, he should be fine. I just chose not to take the chance because the night temps were getting real low.
