North texas snake help please

cfresh79 Nov 13, 2011 10:44 PM

Okay, so My sons brought home 2 snakes today they found in the grass outside. They are just the common little grass snakes you find around here. They are greyish in color with white undersides. Just looking for the species so we can feed them properly.
We had a Ball Python for years and he passed last year due to old age and I think my boys want to try to keep these little guys. I will try to get a pic posted but I am sure you all will identify them before then. I also didn't think they should be housed together but the kids found them together. Will they eat each other? They are fairly small 4-6 inches, small barrel nosed faces. Very docile. Any help would be appreciated. they will be in a 100 gallon tank if I let them keep them.

We live in North Texas Dallas Fort Worth area. Thanks

It sounds like a brown snake

But could also be an earthsnake. Here is a good website for you to check out: www.herpsoftexas.org/view/snakes Also I would check your state regs. I believe you are required to have a hunting license and a reptile stamp to legally collect in Texas. Here is a caresheet if you decide to keep them: www.repticzone.com/caresheets/1280.html

Certainly not knocking your boys for being very interested in the tiny snakes(I certainly was too as a kid), but the snakes would be much better off if they were let go where they were found. I don't see a very good future for the tiny fragile snakes at all with little kids to be quite honest.

cheers, ~Doug

Sounds like an Earthsnake to me. They are common in yards.

Here's one from the College Station area -

Here is a pic of one of them. I am pretty sure they are earth snakes as well now that I am seeing more pics.

Those look like Rough Earthsnakes.

They aren't particularly good captives. They will only eat small worms and slugs. I would suggest letting them go.
