Another Cage Building Question

pbarkerb Nov 29, 2011 10:06 AM

I have built a large 6'X2' cage out of oak plywood and solid oak trim. I plan on placing 3 removable dividers to house 3 of our snakes until my son's CRB gets large enough for the cage itself. i am placing a piece of 6'X2' piece of glass for the floor and need to know if 1/8" glass would suffice? I will be placing under tank heaters in the cage for now. I will place a RHP later when it only houses 1 snake. BTW, i will seal all of the wood before placing the glass. Also, I plan on using 2 oak framed plexi doors for the front of the cage. With the oak frame, will 1/8" plexi do? Or, do I need to place 1/4"?

I still think you should go with expanded foam PVC or styrene sheet plastic instead of glass. Maybe even that polycarbonate they sell at many DIY stores. Glass can break.

Even a coat of pour-on bar-top epoxy would be better IMO.

I would also consider no undertank heaters under wood. You can use them inside the cage if you want (Ultratherms can be used inside). Placing a heat pad under some tile is one way to get a nice basking spot. You can get some thin heat insulation (a foil bubble wrap type of product sold for attics, just make sure it is temp rated for at least 130 deg F, most are higher than that easily.), tape the heat pad on top, then place tile over the heat pad. Place it in the cage.

CHEs are another awesome choice as long as you screen them off so the animal can't touch them.

I went ahead and sealed the inside with a urethane sealer, then glued white plastic shower surround material on the bottom, sides, and back. I am going to place my heaters between that and tile. I also wired three lights that I will connect to a dimmer. These will be protected by a screened frame. The entire cage is oak, except for the back pieces, which is pine plywood. I have sealed it with urethane and then covered it with the plastic. Hopefully that will not be a problem?

Hey, I am not sure if 1/8" glass will be enough or not. However, I do know that Clay Davenport has plans on his site for different enclosures and racks. You should check it out. I will add a link to his site for you.
