Looking at your snake, I would guess that's its a regular jungle carpet.it might be a jungle-diamond Cross, but with morelia, it can be hard to tell.

right on..i appreciate the info.. even at night he likes to spend his time in his "canopy" i created for him, unfortunately my room gets kinda cold at night, i have the heat lamp, and UVB light off at night obviously, but the UTH is always on, i guess he just likes to thermo-reg.. he knows where the heat is if he needs it late at night.
thanks!

Looks like a very nice jungle carpet to me. I would not use the UVB light as pythons are nocturnal. They do not use UVB and it can be damaging to their eyes. Under tank heating is your best heat source for constrictors as over head lighting tends to dry out humidity. Radiant heat panels are said to be a good over head heat provider. Enjoy your new snake and best of luck with him !!! Bill

thanks Sarge, I'm a little confused because I only use the UVB compact florescent(mercury infested, ridiculously expensive) reptile glo 5.0 spectrum, in the day time, not at night. The women at that "commercial" pet store said that was the light I should use as his daytime spectrum, I guess i just got tricked into spending more money, that's too bad.. please correct me if I'm still not understanding what light to use. thanks man!

Well, truth is, they don't need ANY UVB light whatsoever, and almost every pet store will suggest that you buy one with any snake you buy because they tell their employees to do this in order to sell more of the stock on ther shelves as well. All it needs is to be able to properly thermoregulate from a warm area to properly digest meals and be able to retreat to a cooler area as the snake sees fit to conserve it's energy, that is all a snakes life consists of anyway.

Certain lizards like Iguanas for example MUST have UVB rays to synthesize vitamin D, but snakes do not, and yours is primarily nocturnal anyway. Yes, pet stores are notorious for telling customers they need UVB lights, hot rocks, astro-turf cage liners, heat lamp fixtures, and all sorts of stuff you don't need.

Just go with a cheap normal florecent light fixture for lighting alone for a normal daytime cycle, and a heat source that allows the snake to bask in the high 80's if it chooses. Constant UVB exposure as the other poster said is dangerous as heck anyway, and the snake sure as heck doesn't need it.

thanks Doug...So approx how much damage have i done to his eyes having the 5.0 light on in a dual fixture with a regular incandescent heat lamp for 3 months? both are 25 watts... at least he has a canopy on the heat lamp side of the fixture where he spends about 95% of the time, id say..

getting rid of the UVB in the A.M.!

Well, I really don't know the answer to that one, maybe none at all yet actually, but you are doing the right thing by tossing it though.

best of luck with the snake, it sure is a beauty!

Looks like a nice jungle to me too, but Morelia really isn't my strong forte. Here is a link to a place that you could certainly get all the info you could possibly want and then some.
