Plants for snapper

twillis10 Dec 14, 2011 08:07 PM

Hi everyone,
I have a snapping turtle I got around 2 years ago and it is doing great. I am big into snakes and monitors but this guy is still one of my favorites. His habitat is great for him, but I would love to have more plants in his tank (though he probly doesnt care). Anyways he has destroyed any plants I have ever put in the tank. Are there any plants he would do well in his tank that he might leave alone? I kinda figured he would tear anything up that I put in there, but figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. Thanks.

In my experience there is nothing I can put in my 2 yr old males tank that he wont tear up. I keep him down in the basement and most days I can hear him all the way across the house and up a flight of stairs rearranging his aquarium. So my snappers set up is a lot less natural looking then Id like it to be. I don't think they require the vivid set ups most of us would like them to have. Mine seems pretty content pushing and pulling around the few bricks I have in there for him to crawl up on to bask if he chooses. I just have to re stack and fix things in the tank the more he grows. Ive never been into turtles very much like I am with snakes and lizards. But My snapper is probably the most entertaining and rewarding reptile Ive ever kept. Feeding time sure beats the heck out of the same routine in feeding a snake the same old mouse or rat. There is my 2 cents. If ya find away to set up a natural looking snapper habitat for one that is big enough to do its own decorating Id love to hear about it.
