DIY Turtle topper- cheap!

a153fish Jan 01, 2012 11:38 AM

Just set up a Turtle tank for my albino Red Ear Sliders. I will most likey make another nicer one with time, but I wanted to put them in a larger tank, as I had them in a much smaller one for a while. I need to get some more decorations like plants and more gravel, so I can put some in the topper it'self. But for a quick fix I think it works pretty good and the Turtles have alreadu made use of it.

Great job and cool set-up!

Mine would be able to crawl out of it as she is huge

Thank you! Well, the tub has a cover which I may take and cut a large hole in the center, kinda like just leaving the outer edge, so I can attach a wire mesh on it, then that would keep them from getting out, or any thing from getting in. I was and still am a bit nervous about my cat getting at them. So far she doesn't look to be able to get up to them. Though she has noticed them swimming around, and I know if she could she would, lol. The only other issue I have is that it is not really attached to the tank. I don't think the Turtles themselves can move it, but if the cat ever found a way up there she definately could knock it off.

Can you explain the ramp? What is it made of, how did you secure it? All that good stuff.

Why certainly! I thought I could just use the peice that I cut out as a ramp, but it wasn't long enough. So I looked around and found an old plastic lid from an old sterilite tub that had cracked. I cut it out and hoped I could just bend it but it was too briyyle and snapped off. So I tapped it with aluminum tape. I figured it would not soak up the moisture and get water logged. To give the ramp some grip, I simply made some striping with a hot glue gun, and let it cool, of course. The base of the ramp where it sits in the tub is attached by pop rivets. But anything would work really. You could use silicone, but then you have to leave it sit for 24 hours, and probably would need something to hold it in place while it dries. I have some hobby clamps that work great for that. However I hate waiting, so I went with the rivets.

Now son, I think this is probably the coolest thing you have come up with ever! Way cool. I am sharing with my foster home that does the aquatic turtles.

What I like about it is that the Turtles get to swim in the entire tank, where as with most Turtle tanks you have to use part of the upper section for some kind of leadge, or shelf for them to crawl onto. Then you have to use a smaller less powerful filter, or buy one of those special tanks that have one side cut for the filter, but then you still loose a lot of swimming area. This Idea can be tweaked in many ways also. You can use an extra long tub and practically make a second floor over much of the top of the tank, and of course the ramp can be larger to accomodate larger Turtles, or a group of Turtles.
