gre-banded kingsnake

johnwoodcock Jan 11, 2012 04:42 PM

I have aquired an adult grey-banded kingsnake 44cm long, weighing over 200g. The bands that should be white are actually yellowish orange and the grey zones are orangish-grey. In all other respects this looks like a grey-banded kingsnake to me. Is this within normal variation or do you think I may have a hybrid? Thanks, John johnwoodcock@hotmail.ca

Looks like a normal, pure alterna. You may see some color bleeding and fading in older specimens.

I agree with Coach, it looks like a pure alterna. The orange bleeding into the other colors is normal and usually happens when they are older. Not all of them get it but it's not that uncommon. That one looks like a classic eastern phenotype Blair's phase like you might find at Langtry, Juno or Loma Alta.

Lucky snake! Has a really nice cage set-up! Don't let my snakes see it or they will get jealous! They think they got it good! Great looking alterna too!
