Homemade Incubator question / feedback

fascination Jan 16, 2012 07:00 PM

I am in the process of building a homemade incubator using a front glass door cooler I have, similar to a wine cooler, that is 6 feet tall and 2 feet wide. i will be gutting it for starters removing all the factory cooling parts. I will be using the Herpstat 2. My concerns are heating. Should I use the 11" flexwatt tape and place it down the entire back and bottom of incubator or go with the radiant heating pads. Would 1 be enough? I see them offered in a 11" X 30" and are rated at 100 watts. I know the pads are more but I'd be ok with that as I want a nice unit. The pads have a cleaner look once installed IMO. I am going to be using the SIM egg containers. I also would like to have some feedback on insulating the cooler if needed, fans, etc. Thanks in advance.

I use the Hovabator cover with an x-large styrofoam box that you may find in the streets (from frozen meat shipments). Just cut a beveled opening for the cover to fit, and pre - test the temps for your needs. If your cover doesn't have the fan attached, you can buy it separately from the mfgr. and wire it up yourself. It's very simple and mfgr. will send instructions. I only use an incubator with BP eggs. Colubrid eggs go au natural, but you get bigger babies. mike
